Wisdom for living!
We all need it, now more than ever it would seem. But when we talk about wisdom what do we mean? For many knowledge has become synonymous with wisdom. A belief that if we have enough knowledge about how something works and can predict its function then we have become wise in that area. But wisdom in the bible although, certainly not downplaying the role knowledge plays, is far greater than this.
True wisdom is a given from God.
This can be seen specifically in the book of Proverbs in verses like:
For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding
- Proverbs 2:6
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
- Proverbs 9:10
Wisdom then is much more than just knowledge, knowledge is important. But without wisdom knowledge can be under-utilised and unfruitful.
Now why doe this matter?
It matters because no matter how much we know or are learning we need wisdom. And the most reliable and trustworthy place to receive wisdom is from God.
The revelation of which we have through the scriptures. The wisdom we need is in the scriptures, the problem is that often we don’t look there. We go to friends or family, Google or YouTube before we go to God.
Don’t get me wrong, God can use friends and family and even Google or YouTube on occasion. But the primary place to find wisdom for living is in the scriptures.
I want to encourage us as a church this week to dig in to the scriptures.
You don’t need to do it alone. Join one of the bible studies online that we are currently offering as a church or decide to read a passage with friends or family and talk through it.
I believe if we do this we will find wisdom, not just knowledge, wisdom for living.
